Der Dokumentarfilm „Der Traum vom Fliegen“ zeigt, wie der Regisseur durch Ostdeutschland fährt und mit jungen Männern spricht, die sich dazu entschlossen haben, Berufssoldaten zu werden. Es stellt sich heraus, dass die Hauptmotivation dieser jungen Männer die Angst vor der Arbeitslosigkeit ist.
Behutsam porträtiert der Film einige dieser Männer und deren Mütter und zieht einen Vergleich zwischen vom Krieg zerstörten Jugoslawien und dieser Region Deutschlands. Besondere Aktualität bekommt dieses dokumentarische Filmessay durch die Nato-Intervention gegen Jugoslawien, die gerade am Tag der Fertigstellung des Filmes begann.
The documentary „A Dream of Flying“ shows how the director travels through East Germany and speaks with young men who have decided to become professional soldiers. As it turns out the main motivation of these young men is the fear of unemployment.
The film portrays carefully some of these men and their mothers, and draws a comparison between war-torn Yugoslavia, and this region of Germany. Particularly relevant gets this documentary film essay by the NATO intervention against Yugoslavia, which was just beginning on the date of completion of the film.
